Project Title :

  • Establishment of a Cheese Manufacturing Plant in Sayla and Chotila blocks of Surendranagar District to provide Sustainable Additional Source of Income to the people even during drought periods.

Project Objective :

  • To help nearly 500 women from as many households to have a sustainable additional source of income through the manufacture and sales of cheese.

Project Area :

  • Surendernagar District; Sayla and Chotila Talukas; 20 villages

Total Project Cost :

  • Rs. 3,294,500=00:  JFPR Grant – Rs. 2,421,925=00

Project Duration

  • One Year

Targeted Beneficiaries (No of BPL Families, Other Households, Tribals Etc)

  • 500 women from BPL families in the two talukas.

Project Outputs And Monitorable Indicators

  • Increase in income of about Rs 9000 to Rs 10000 over a base income for 500 households in 20 villages of the region.

Key Implementation Activities

  • Setting up of the institutional arrangement for implementing the project - A Company under the producer's company law would be formed consisting of the women federated under the umbrella of Mahila Manch.

  • Setting up of the cheese-manufacturing unit - Location of the plant would be Sayla and Chotila highway in Surendranagar district and purchase of land and constructed building is proposed. Equipment will be procured and installed in the first year

  • Processing of cheese - Cheese making technology will be followed by the trial and error method and changes will be incorporated upon these results. The milks will be procured from the nearby 25 villages within the radius of 50 km of the proposed plant.

  • Marketing - A buy back arrangement with an existing cheese manufacturer and seller would be established.

Implementation Arrangements And Partnerships

  • Creation of institutional arrangements with local women federations

    • Land & Building will be taken on lease agreements.

    • A producers company of the women would be formed to carry out the venture.

    • The company would recruit professional staff to look after all the operations of the cheese plant.

    • The company would have a buyback arrangement with an existing cheese manufacture and seller for the marketing of the cheese.
